Okay everybody, Associates’ Phantom Gourmet is back! This time around 6 Associates decided to tackle the age-old question that’s brought up in every household across America: where should we get pizza from? It’s thankless work putting down unholy amounts of pizza across 4 of our favorite pizza spots in a single day, but somebody had to do it. “Clear eyes, full guts, can’t lose,” we whispered to ourselves as we shoveled slice after slice down our gullets in service of bringing our subscribers the content that they crave. So now let’s dive into our findings:
“High End Pizza and Beer” - Brewer’s Fork
7 Moulton St, Charlestown, MA 02129
Brewer’s Fork is a renowned pizza joint and brewery nestled at the end of Bunker Hill Street. It has a rustic, industrial atmosphere common in many breweries in the northeast. But what sets this brewery apart from the rest is the caliber of pizza being sauced out of the kitchen. We started out with a “Marge” pizza, which, as the name would suggest, is a classic margherita pizza. But this was no ordinary margherita pizza- the Associates were blown away by the freshness of the ingredients, compelling one Associate to scream that it was a “10 out of 10!” (it was the first bite of pizza we had that day, so we may have been a bit eager throwing perfect scores around willy-nilly). But against all odds, our second pie, the Killer B, confirmed to us that Brewers Fork belongs in the pantheon of great pizza places in New England. This pie’s combination of genoa salami and local hot honey is a culinary experience to remember, perfectly complemented by a crisp crust. And what makes Brewers Fork a must-visit establishment is the wide selection of craft brews they have on tap (word to the wise: check out the “Holy Goat Nitro Rogue Planet” if you want to get your Guinness fix).
“Lock Down Value Play” - Jenny’s Pizza
320 Medford St, Charlestown, MA 02129
Next on our list was a Charlestown mainstay: Jenny’s Pizza. I don’t think any Townie hasn’t had a slice or two from Jenny’s at some point in their life. But what made this trip different was the ability to speak to the new owner, Kelmend (AKA "Kely"). Kely cut his teeth in Marblehead whipping up pies, but had greater aspirations to one day own his own shop. After shopping around, he made contact with the previous owner of Jenny’s and the rest is history. Interestingly, he let the Associates know that he intended to name his pizza shop Mimi’s after his daughter (a cute little toddler who was there to help her dad that day cook homemade meatballs, which are dynamite), but decided that the Jenny’s name was too ingrained into the Charlestown community to change. But being a great guy aside, what really matters is the quality of pizza Kely was able to produce. And boy, were we impressed! To keep things fair, we decided to stick with a margherita pizza. And this thing blew our socks off! It was cooked to perfection and the sauce felt like it was Irish step dancing on our tongues. Eating this pizza is the type of experience that might compel you to smoke a cigarette afterwards. No two ways about it: Jenny’s is high quality pizza for low budget prices. “Big Flavor” - Tradesman Coffee Shop & Pizza Bar
50 Hood Park Dr, Boston, MA 02129
After we polished off our Jenny’s pizza on the sidewalk like a flock of seagulls, we waddled to the other side of town to pay our friends at Tradesman a visit. It was at this point in the day that we threw caution to the wind and decided to go off the beaten path for some fan-favorite pizza toppings. First up was the Buffalo Chicken Pizza, which included pulled buffalo chicken, pepper jack, crumbed bleu cheese, ranch, diced pickled celery, and breadcrumbs. It provided a good amount of heat/spice without being too powerful, and the bleu cheese crumble was the talk of the table. But it was the second pizza we tried, the Spinach & Goat Cheese Pizza, that had one Associate lost for words until he found the most precise way he could possibly articulate this pies perfect balance of garlic: “after the spinach and goat cheese pizza, you’ll sleep well…but you’ll sleep alone.” All in all, Tradesman produced two elite pies that we have already since returned to demolish a second time.
“All Around Play” - Monument Restaurant & Tavern
251 Main St, Charlestown, MA 02129
Our last stop on our town-wide culinary tour was Monument Restaurant & Tavern. Monument is a hybrid gastropub/bistro style spot on Main Street that is an incredibly popular spot for all walks of life to hunker down for hours for eating, drinking, and merriment. The Associates were not immune to its charm and dove in with both feet. The Margherita Pizza was outstanding, but was outdone by the explosive flavor of the Nashville Hot pizza. The latter pie was described by one Associate as, “if jalapeno poppers and potato skins came together to make a pizza.” We were so awestruck by the high quality of the cheese on both pizzas that we considered rooting for the Green Bay Packers next season. But what really sets Monument apart is that pizza is just one of the many items on the menu that will blow you away. As a result, we couldn’t help ourselves but to indulge in some wings. All in all, if you haven’t yet been to Monument, you need to stop reading this newsletter right now and get down there for a Nashville Hot pizza and a beer.
If we didn't hit up your favorite pizza spot in Charlestown, let us know in the comments! We'll definitely be back to make sure we've had a slice from every Charlestown establishment possible!
